Book Reviews

Mirko Jeleč’s book, based on facts, court documentation, testimonies of unbiased witnesses, aims to protect the one and only truth from oblivion, the truth of the ordinary persons exposed to threats, prison, and concentration camps, fearing for their life. This kind of truth from war in Bosnia, untarnished by political manipulation, is narrated in 25 stories written in simple and clear language. It is documentary prose genre, where the narratives are intertwined with facts, written accounts, and the author’s own perspectives of the events. The book is embellished by its moderation, righteousness, truthfulness, and beautiful style. It looks for the best in man, despite their nationality or religious background. This book is cathartic and cleanses us from hatred, and opens up new levels of understanding.

                                                                                                                     Prof. Sead Alić

In this difficult task of reading through extensive materials, searching for reliable sources and witnesses of that miserable time (just the transcripts from The Hague Tribunal go over a several thousand pages), Mirko Jeleč began with the desire to write this unbiased documentary prose which talks about the absurdity of an unnecessary war and the fates of ordinary people who, guiltless, became its victims. Mirko Jeleč has written a book that won’t be appealing to nationalists and the politicians in power. But this book, written in an easy and simple style, succinctly, but powerfully, with lots of spirit, is an irrefutable account of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the horrors that happened there. The consequences of the war in the devastated Bosnia are huge: a hundred thousand Muslims, Serbs, and Croats killed, two million people displaced, and three decades of parties in power which are leading us into an endless abyss.
